CHAPTER ONE

It’s amazing what kind of knowledge a girl can glean in a bathroom.

Kat pretended to be intent on fixing a stray lock of hair, while out of the corner of her eye she recognized two snow bunnies of the type that often hung around the local ski resorts of Park City, Utah. A blonde with big hair and a bubbled cleavage leaned toward the mirror and brushed an imaginary speck from her cheek. She spread a new coat of cherry-colored lipstick on her pouting lower lip then checked her sparkling veneers once before turning to her friend. “I swear, Patti, I’m not leaving here tonight without Michael Blake attached to my side.”

“How much money did you bring to bid on him?” Patti was gazing at her friend’s reflection in the wall-length mirrors and trying without success to make her chest stick out and up as provocatively. She looked like Midge compared to Barbie.

“I could only come up with a thousand, and I had to borrow the last hundred from Tony. I know that’s not very much, but I’m hoping that the rest of the hooty women from around here are all friends of his ex and won’t dare bid on him. I hear she’s such a bitch.”

“Are you serious, you borrowed money from your boyfriend to bid on another man for a week? God, Heather, that’s even tacky for you.”

Heather pulled at the hem of her skin-tight dress, leaving even more of her augmented bust exposed. “If everything goes the way I’ve got it planned, Michael Blake will be mine soon and Tony will be history.”

Patti stared at her companion through the long expanse of mirrors. When she noticed Kat at the other end of the row of polished sinks, Katherine applied fresh lipstick with a feigned disinterest, not wishing to be caught eavesdropping.

The redhead turned back to her friend. “Michael Blake doesn’t even know you. How do you know you’re his type?”

“Watch and learn, honey. Believe me, I’m his type. I’m every man’s type. And by next weekend he’ll know me very well. Even if I do have to buy him to get his attention.”

“I think you’re dreaming. Michael Blake is going to be auctioned off for a lot more than a thousand dollars. He’s incredibly gorgeous and generous too, apart from being extremely successf…”

Their voices faded as the door swung closed behind the pair. Kat stood staring at her reflection. Her expression changed from disdain to a renewed determination. Snapping the clasp on her satin evening bag, she whispered to herself, “Your friend’s right, Ms. Snow Bunny, Michael isn’t going home with you or anyone like you.”

She couldn’t say what he had intended when he’d accepted an invitation to be one of Park City’s most eligible bachelors in Make-A-Wish’s New Year’s Day local celebrity auction, but tonight Michael Blake would be going home with her. Steeling her nerves, she finished up and left the bathroom.

“There you are, Kat, I was just coming to look for you,” Georgi scolded gently as Katherine returned to the main room.
